Hi there.
I have got the beginnings of my site up and running. (My first attempt at a website - thankyou Indexhibit!)
I was wondering, when I do a google search for Leanne Bell Gonczarow (my name and URL: www.leannebellgonczarow.com) none of my site appears except a directory of some sort with a list of files...

http://www.leannebellgonczarow.com/files/

Is there any way I can stop this from appearing and have my site appear?

Best Wishes,

Leanne

How long have you had your site up? It takes a few weeks usually.

Hi Vaska,
It's probably been up about a week or so, so that explains it. Thanks so much for your help and for indexhibit - its great.

check your folder, you need to change the rights on your folder, somebody hacked your page

Yeah, kimo's right, you've definitely been hacked (by a none too skilled "script kiddie" though). Check your files folder for a rouge index.htm, index.html or index.php file.

The hack could have something to do with the permissions of your web spaces files and folders, a rogue and insecure PHP script you may have installed earlier (unlikely) or even your web hosts poorly configured shared hosting. I very much doubt the 'kiddie' has done anything to or with your Indexhibit installation, or are even aware it exists on your webspace.

When you have the script kiddie situation resolved (doesn't seem TOO serious, but better safe then sorry), try to use meta tags in your index.php file to help search engines with indexing your site.

Adding the following after your tag could help: -

  1. <meta name='description' content='Leanne Bell Gonczarows portfolio' />

The above desccription tag works best, but some still use keyword meta tag also. Depends on what relevant information you put in them.

Find out more about meta tags with the following: -

...and if you feel like playing cyber-detective, 'trace' the so called "Crazy Cracker" via Google.

Good luck!

Hi,

just wanted to reply to this thread. It seems like google finds my url without a problem. But when I go to google images, non of my images show up. How can this be? Do i need to adjust my meta tags? In my source i have the following meta name:

< meta name="generator" content="HTML Tidy for Linux (vers 1 September 2005), see www.w3.org" />

Any ideas?

Thanks!

Mark

Hey again Mark!

The following meta tag: -

  1. <meta name="generator" content="HTML Tidy for Linux (vers 1 September 2005), see www.w3.org" />

Seems to be created by your web editor when you choose an option like 'Clean up HTML', (Dreamweaver, GoLive, etc). It isn't needed.

But, something like the following could help your search ranking: -

  1. <meta name='description' content='Extrafunk graphic design and photography.' />
  2. <meta name='author' content='Mark Westerburgen' />
  3. <meta name='copyright' content='Mark Westerburgen © 200X' />

For more meta tag info, see the following: -

Like what you've done with your site.
Peace.

Hey leslie long time no speak! Thanks for the reply, you got me off to a good start a couple weeks back! I read up on the meta-tag links and added some to my index.php. So i guess now i'll just have to wait like Vaksa said in a previous post? Or should it work immediately? If that's the case then i still have a problem =)

How are you btw?

Hello, first of all, I'd like to say thanks for this amazing Indexhibit!

I'm nearly finishing up my website but having a very similar and annoying problem with Leanne. When I do a google search for 'eiirp.com' the only result which related to mine is this 'Index of /files' which display the contents of my image folder! I have added meta tag few days ago but still none of keywords are not working yet. I've asked the hosting service about this and they replied that first, it seems nothing to do with them (servage.net) and secondly, I should change the the folder permission to 755 and files must be 644.

I have no idea how to prevent google to not to list my index of files! embarrassing!

Hey Vaska, you are totally right about that... just had to thank leslie for some advice he gave me some time back. Give repect, show repect =)! What about me and some others on this forum make a dedication site? I'm sure there are loads of people wanting to give you guys compliments, including me. Or does that sound pathetic? =)

Or did you mean something else by your reply?

Myah,

Do a search about robot.txt (or is it robots.txt? geez, I need more coffee).

This should let you tell google and other search engines not to peek in your /files folder or any other places you might want the engine not to index. This does not prevent users or other (read spam bots and all) web crawlers to index the files, but this is pretty effective with "normal" search engines.

Thanks Antoine,

Just added robots.txt;
User-agent: Googlebot
Disallow: /files

Google is still showing 'index of/files' yet, but probably I should wait for a while?

Is this a common problem?

hey antoine, should i also do the same? I don't want to decline search engines.. i want them to show my images and have my link at the top of the list. More open source.

Cheers!

mymy,

This is not a problem per say. It is just how things work and sometimes you do want your files to be indexed, sometimes you don't... And yes, you'll have to wait a while... eventually your files won't be indexed by google and removed from their cache... It may take a few days, a few weeks... for that I can't say.

Mark,

Well you should do the same if you do want to prevent indexing... If I read you properly, you don't, so no need to do that. Search about robots.txt and learn how it can be used. Knowing it is better than me telling you what you can or can't do ;)

Antoine, thanks for your comment.

It is not that I want Google to index my website but the way they are doing is a bit unusual for me since they are displaying the page which I didn't expect people to see as my main pages:
http://eiirp.com/files/?C=S;O=A
http://www.eiirp.com/files/
which basically, I don't know where they are.

I'd like them to index my website so people can visit when they type my name or keyword but I think the way they are doing now is a bit odd.

Oh, just found a mistake in my previous post.

It is not that I 'don't' want Google to index...

I would like Google to index my files! @_@

mymy,

Having the right combination of meta tags can also help a great deal. (meaning that your meta tags match what is written on the page)

If you followed LeslieOA's example, you should be on the right track to google stardom... You do have to wait for their next spider to come around in order to have some updated data in their search engine.

Hey Antoine,

Just wanted to reply to our previous conversation in this thread. It's been a couple of weeks now since i've changed my meta-tags, but still no luck search engines like google. They still don't view my images. Could there be another reason for this?

Hope to hear for you or anyone else who can help=)

Thanks!

Hi Mark,

I do not have any definite answers on how Goggle index images... your page does pop up has #1 when searching for extrafunk, which is quite good I believe.

The images might be indexed using other keywords...and for the pages I've checked, none of your images have alt tags. That might be the main reason they are not indexed... You need to adjust your template to have the title or the caption put into your img tag. (There a post in the forum about this I believe)

And if you can, optimize your page loading... it takes about 7sec to get one page ;). You also have one javascript error... possibly an unused script call.
